Skiing on Kopaonik

Kopaonik is the highest mountain massif in central Serbia, with its highest peak – Pančić’s Peak – rising to an altitude of 2,017 meters above sea level.

This mountain is part of Kopaonik National Park and is known for its high number of sunny days throughout the year, which is why it is rightfully nicknamed the “Sunny Mountain.”

In addition to being a natural oasis, Kopaonik is also the largest ski resort in Serbia, ideal for winter sports enthusiasts as well as those seeking active holidays year-round. Below, you’ll find essential information for skiing on Kopaonik.

The History of Skiing on Kopaonik

Kopaonik has a long and rich skiing tradition – as early as 1935, the first ski competitions were held here. This sporting activity continued until 1941, when it was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. During the war years, the then-mountain lodge on Kopaonik was completely destroyed. On the same site, a new lodge was built in 1948 and named Olga Dedijer, in honor of the renowned doctor and participant in the National Liberation Struggle.

A major step toward international recognition came in March 1984, when Kopaonik hosted the prestigious Alpine Skiing European Cup. This event earned the mountain the status of an international sports center.

Skiing Today

Skiing on Kopaonik typically begins in early December and lasts until April. Thanks to a modern artificial snowmaking system, most of the slopes (97%) are covered with snow even during periods of low natural snowfall.

There are 28 ski lifts and two conveyor belts available, with a total length of 22 kilometers, capable of transporting over 34,000 skiers per hour. This ensures an efficient and enjoyable experience on the slopes without long wait times.

The longest slope is Krčmar, stretching 2,020 meters, while the total length of all ski trails on Kopaonik is approximately 64 kilometers. Dozens of trails are designated for both alpine and Nordic skiing—the Nordic tracks alone reach up to 20 kilometers in length. For those seeking a professional challenge, three FIS-certified slopes are available for slalom and giant slalom. Night skiing enthusiasts can enjoy illuminated slopes such as Pančić’s Peak Karaman Greben and Malo Jezero
